If you can see that the mortar between the bricks on the outside of your chimney is crumbling, that can mean two things: the interior wall of your chimney may be in even worse shape because chimneys deteriorate from the inside out. Or, the interior of your chimney, if lined, is intact, and you simply need to have your chimney exterior re-pointed to refurbish the seal. Re-pointing involves grinding out some of the existing deteriorating mortar, and re-packing those grooves with new mortar…certainly a less expensive solution than a rebuild of your chimney from the roofline up.
